Built in 1931, the Mount Victoria Tunnel connects the eastern suburbs and airport to the centre of Wellington city.

Around 45,000 vehicles pass through the concrete and steel tunnel each day, which also accommodates pedestrians and cyclists, who use an elevated pedestrian ramp on the north side.

During World War II, the government planned to use the tunnel as an air raid shelter if Wellington should be attacked.
