In October 2023 Wellington produced Water New Zealand’s largest conference to date. The event attracted more than 1,600 delegates to Tākina Wellington Convention & Exhibition Centre. It brought together speakers, exhibitors, and visitors from regional authorities, Crown Research Institutes, and government agencies. They attended the conference along with consultants, suppliers, and scientists.
Water New Zealand is the country’s largest water industry body. It promotes the sustainable management and development of the water environment. The annual conference provides leadership in the water sector through collaboration, professional development, and networking. For many years, the not-for-profit had hoped to hold the event in the capital. Wellington is home to Water New Zealand’s headquarters and it had the potential to attract speakers and attendees from central government. But there hadn’t been a suitable venue.
Chris Evans, general manager of professional conference organiser Avenues Event Management, says Tākina was a key factor in choosing the capital.
“As a new venue, it offered the capacity and facilities we needed. Especially as the conference continues to grow, it is an ideal fit for our expanding event.
“The venue's central location was ideal. All major accommodation options and the dinner venue at TSB/Shed 6 were within walking distance. This convenience greatly reduced the need for transportation supporting our sustainability goals, and enhancing the overall experience for attendees.”
Chris says Tākina’s spaces proved flexible and facilitated the flow of attendees throughout the building.
“We utilised the downstairs ‘nook’ for the registration desk, which worked perfectly for our needs. The Expo, incorporating 185 exhibition sites, was spread across two levels, maximising the space. Exhibitors appreciated being close to the delegates, which fostered great engagement.
“During the conference, we split the plenary into four breakout rooms after morning tea. To ensure minimal disruption to the schedule, we had the MC and delegates assist in turning the chairs around, which helped the operations team reset the room quickly and efficiently.”
