If you like to choose hotels based on their restaurants and recreational facilities, then put family-friendly Rydges Wellington at the top of your list
Pick your room
This four-star-plus hotel has a range of rooms, including 19 apartment-style suites complete with washer and dryer facilities – perfect for a longer stay or family holidays with the kids. No matter which room type you choose, all have kitchenettes and views out over the harbour or city. Like all Rydges hotels, there’s free WiFi available, plus all rooms feature flat-screen televisions.
There’s a range of accessible rooms available and all the floors in the hotel are fully wheelchair accessible. The leisure facilities and Portlander Bar & Grill are accessible, plus the main entrance to the hotel is on street level with no steps.
It was great coming "home" to my room with harbour view after a busy workday, a good selection of pillows too; the in-house restaurant has one of the best steaks in town.
Local and seasonal eats
Rydges Wellington’s in-house restaurant is regularly frequented by locals who love the unique take on the grill house concept: it’s local, seasonal, cultivated – and just a little bit wild. As well as lamb, the menu features other superb cuts of meat served alongside classically delicious sides and condiments; their Café de Welly Butter isn’t to be missed, containing the chef’s own secret blend of 35 herbs and spices (you can try to guess them, but the staff will just smile and neither confirm nor deny).
Portlander Bar pours local wines from Martinborough and Wairarapa like Gladstone Vineyards and Ata Rangi, as well as some local Wellington craft beers. There’s also a dedicated whisky bar that stocks numerous whiskies from around the world.
On your doorstep
If you’re in town for the big game, you couldn’t pick a better place to stay than Rydges Wellington – it’s a quick and easy walk to Sky Stadium. You’re also super close by to the Wellington Railway Station and ferry terminals. Parliament is just down the road if you fancy a tour of the halls of power, as is Lambton Quay if you fancy a spot of shopping.
