When you think of Wairarapa wine country, Martinborough usually comes to mind. But a short 20 minute journey northeast reveals a gem in the small village of Gladstone. It's home to Urlar Vineyard — a peaceful place doing things a little differently. Urlar (pronounced er-lar) is a Scottish Gaelic word meaning “of the Earth.” The vineyard is true to its name and has a team that works with nature to grow healthy vines and delicious wines.
The vineyard was established in 2004 with a clear goal: to grow wine that truly reflects its place. That vision took a big step forward in 2024 with the completion of a purpose-built winery, followed by the opening of a strikingly-designed cellar door. Overlooking the vines and a peaceful lake, the sunny space is stylish and welcoming. Its big decks, beautiful interiors, and sweeping views make it the perfect place to relax and unwind.
The chef serves up a small, seasonal menu full of bold, country-style flavours. Wherever possible, ingredients from local producers are used. It’s a taste of the region on every plate that goes perfectly with a glass of wine. Whether you’re a local looking for your next favourite long lunch spot or visiting the region for the weekend, Urlar is a must-stop.
The winemakers at Urlar use biodynamic principles. This means no chemicals, smart farming, and great care for the land. The result is clean, pure wines full of flavour. It also means it's been a BioGro certified organic vineyard since 2010. The award-winning range includes bubbles, pinot noir, pinot rosé, sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, and riesling. Each is shaped by the seasons and the soil they come from.
“We are committed to making handcrafted quality organic wines whilst sharing our values from the vineyard to your table”
