Widely regarded as the launchpad for New Zealand’s leading operatic talent, this competition has championed emerging singers since 1956. In the Kiri Te Kanawa Song Quest 2026, elite singers vie for a share of $95,500 in prizes. Watch as six finalists perform with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra conducted by Brad Cohen, at the Grand Final Gala. International judge Frederica von Stade will announce the winner live at the end of the night.
For the first time in its 70-year history, the competition bears the name of its most famous winner, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. The Gisborne-born singer won the competition in 1965 and went on to an illustrious operatic career across the globe.
The 2026 judge, Frederica von Stade, is one of the most beloved mezzo-sopranos of her generation, celebrated for her expressive artistry and enduring contribution to classical music. Affectionately known as “Flicka,” she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1970 and went on to perform more than 300 times with the company. In concert, she has collaborated with eminent conductors and orchestras across the globe.
