Discover Wellington’s indigenous history through unique tours with local storytelling.
60 Cambridge Terrace, Te Aro, Wellington
Experience the thrill of sinking an axe into a wooden target. At central Wellington’s Sweet Axe, you’ll find expert coaches on hand to help you do just that. It doesn’t matter what your background, experience or fitness level is, you’ll be taught the fundamentals of axe throwing. Anyone over the age of 12 can give this sport a go. Sweet Axe provides all necessary safety equipment and guidance to help you hit your mark.
Located on Cambridge Terrace, Sweet Axe boasts eight dedicated axe-throwing targets. The central venue is an easily accessible hub for visitors looking for an adrenaline-pumping activity. You don’t need a big group to join the fun. Walk in solo or with a friend, everyone is welcome.
The brains behind Sweet Axe, Lloyd Bombell and Sarah Hilyard, have designed the space to enhance the experience. The rustic-meets-urban fit-out sets the stage for an exciting time. “Think your favourite dive bar meets underground games club: lots of black, exposed brick, coloured lights, and rock’n’roll pumping at just the right volume,” says Lloyd.
Tucked out the back is the ‘Smash Room’. This is a controlled environment where you can safely break things. Lloyd says it’s a fun and unique way to relieve stress. “Driving a golf club through a beer bottle, frisbee a plate into the wall, or swing a sledgehammer at an old TV — it’s oddly satisfying.” These unwanted items come from local recyclers and charity shops. The waste is sorted and disposed of responsibly.
Out front, you’ll find a licensed bar where guests can relax after letting off steam. There’s pool, table tennis, and an ever-growing collection of board games to dive into. It’s a great way to extend the fun.
