Waiu Park

About the trail

Set in the hills overlooking Wainuiomata, Waiu Park offers walkers and riders a network of 18 trails to explore the ridges, valleys and native bush.

Whether you’re out for a leisurely stroll, new to mountain biking or keen for gut-busting uphill or technical downhill training routes, there’s something for all ages and abilities. There’s even a family-friendly skills area.

Make your way along 4WD tracks and firebreaks, weave through native bush and wetlands, or cross streams and take in 360-degree views over the region.

There are several entry points to Waiu Park and most have car parking available:

  • The main car park is on Waiu Street, Wainuiomata. Many of the most popular trails start here.
  • Summit of Wainuiomata Hill Road/Pukeatapu Hub. Several trails start and finish here. Use the Pukeatapu Bridge to cross the road to the Pukeatapu Hub where you’ll find a map board and trail information.
  • ECNZ 4WD Road, Wainuiomata. Some trails are accessible from this 4WD track, often referred to as the ‘ECNZ Pylon Road’.
  • There are regular bus and train services to Wainuiomata and the surrounding areas. Timetables are available from Metlink.
