Wellington’s compact city centre means that it’s incredibly easy to get around - on foot or on a bike, by public transport, rideshare or private car. Choose to follow your nose or book a guided tour from a local company to see hidden local gems and meet some of Wellington's local personalities.
Walking in Wellington
One of the best ways to explore Wellington is on foot. The central city is only two kilometres in diameter, meaning you can walk from one side to the other in under 30 minutes.
Let the knowledgeable guides at Walk Wellington take you on a tour of the city or grab a Wellington downtown map and explore for yourself.
Wellington has an excellent public transport system which is well used by the locals.
Metlink has an easy to use journey planner to help you get anywhere within the Wellington region using buses, trains or ferries. Be sure to pick up a Snapper card from the Wellington i-SITE Visitor Information Centre - it's the cheaper and faster way to pay.
The Wellington Cable Car leaves from downtown Wellington to the leafy, village-like suburb of Kelburn. At the top of the Cable Car, you will find some of the best views of Wellington.
Here, you will also find the award-winning Cable Car Museum, and the start of the Wellington Botanic Garden.
With Wellington being so compact, getting around on a bike is also a great way to see the city. Hire bikes from Fergs Kayaks on the waterfront, My Ride Wellington on Vivian Street, or Switched On Bikes who offer electric bike hire and guided tours. Store your bike at one of the many bike racks around the central city.
For a day trip bike adventure hire bikes from Green Jersey (Petone and Martinborough) to cycle around to Pencarrow Lighthouse or around the Martinborough vineyards.
For adventurous cyclists, head out and enjoy Wellington's mountain biking tracks - there are a number just on the fringe of the city.
