The Larder
Found in a grand old house, this Miramar-based daytime eatery balances fine food with hearty café fare.
836 Fergusson Drive, Upper Hutt
The shelves at Dough Bakery are full of crusty sourdough, soft focaccia, aromatic rye bread, and seeded gluten-free loaves. Dough has perfected the craft of artisan bread making using the best local and seasonal ingredients.
Take a loaf home, or linger in the café with a coffee and something to eat. The counter is always full of baked goods. There are doughnuts, fresh sandwiches, and plenty of sweet treats. Regulars often come for the chilli cheese scones. Delicate cakes, cookies and scrolls make the perfect take-home treat. The menu champions bread, with eggs on sourdough, toasted sandwiches, and more.
Set inside Whirinaki Whare Taona, the huge gallery space offers a light and bright setting. Artists and regulars rub shoulders with locals and visitors to the area. This is a place of community and connection.
Owners Tim and Mia Tracey spent weeks experimenting with sourdough before their lightbulb moment in 2020. They realised there was a gap in the market for artisan bread, so they established Dough Bakery. Their passion for producing quality food from scratch is evident in every mouthful. Most of their produce is from nearby Mangaroa Farms. They even grow their own cucumbers to make condiments and pickles.
The bread-making journey escalated quickly for Tim and Mia. They have a dedicated bakery (Dough Bakery HQ) also in Upper Hutt, a Doughnut Wagon, and further takeaway locations in Wellington city. They also supply bread and baked goods to their sister café Pickle & Pie.
