The explosive stage show, Bat Out of Hell — The Musical, swoops onto the stage of Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre in August 2027. The musical is based around songs from Meat Loaf’s 1977 album ‘Bat Out of Hell’. It marks the 50th anniversary of its release.  Featuring an all-Kiwi cast and a live band, it covers a uniquely theatrical song list from the 50-year-old album. Expect a fun, chaotic musical that defies traditional theatre rules.

A wild, post-apocalyptic world offers a backdrop for the show. The story follows Strat, an 18-year-old rebel leader of a gang called The Lost, who falls in love with Raven, the sheltered daughter of the city's tyrannical boss, Falco. Packed with massive tunes, you will hear hits like ‘I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)’, ‘Paradise by the Dashboard Light’, ‘Two Out of Three Ain't Bad’, ‘Dead Ringer for Love’, ‘It’s All Coming Back to Me Now’, and the title track.

The Bat Out of Hell album evolved from writer and composer Jim Steinman’s early university workshops. Despite initially being rejected by mainstream radio, it became one of the biggest-selling albums in history. It’s an album that takes up space: big, brash, and loud, like the musical itself.

Ben McDonald, the producer of the musicals Chicago and Menopause the Musical, teams up with Stewart and Tricia Macpherson (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Green Day’s American Idiot musical) to produce the New Zealand tour.
