    Ata Rangi

With more than 40 years' experience, Ata Rangi is an important cornerstone in New Zealand’s wine heritage. The small, family-owned organic winery has a big reputation - especially when it comes to their internationally renowned and award-winning pinot noir.

Clive Paton established the vineyard in 1980. The story goes that he read a research paper about Martinborough having the ideal climate for grape growing. He planted some vines on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough Village. “From that, the idea of Ata Rangi grew,” says Vanessa Paton, part of the family team behind the winery.

Crafted using organic practices, Ata Rangi wines express the unique character of Martinborough. The name Ata Rangi means “dawn sky” or “new beginning” in te reo Māori. It's a reflection of the vineyard’s ethos and its deep connection to the land. “It’s a name that honours our land and reflects the work we do here,” says Vanessa. “Making wine is all about working in sync with the changing seasons and conditions on the land.”

Visitors are welcomed into a warm, intimate setting that blends storytelling with tasting. “We gather around the table to share our wines and stories of our people and the journey of Ata Rangi,” says Vanessa. For those with a taste for aged wines, Ata Rangi offers a special selection of cellar-aged bottles. “Sharing beautiful wines with interesting people from around the world—that’s the best part of my job,” Vanessa adds.

Whether you're a seasoned wine lover or a curious traveller, Ata Rangi offers a taste of New Zealand’s wine culture, rooted in family, land, and legacy.
