Actors perform Amélie the Musical live on stage.

‘Amélie the Musical’ is set to enchant Wellington for its Australasian premiere. The show will play at The Hannah theatre in November. The Grammy and Olivier Award-nominated adaptation follows shy Amélie Poulain, who carries out small acts of kindness for those around her.

Wellington’s Rachel McSweeney, who played Sophie in the 2025 production of ‘Mamma Mia!’, stars as Amélie. Gemma Hoskins is Amélie’s mother, and William Duignan plays the pop icon Elton John. A cast of thirteen takes on many roles, from greengrocers to goldfish. Produced by WITCH Music Theatre, the show captures the whimsy of the film that made Amélie a global favourite. It features a Grammy-nominated score by Daniel Messé and Nathan Tyson, as well as a witty book by Craig Lucas. Directors Maya Handa Naff and Nick Lerew, with music director Hayden Taylor, bring Amélie’s quirky world to life. The Guardian has described the musical as “a magical and emotional triumph”.
