Written when Mozart was operating at the top of his powers, The Marriage of Figaro is considered one of the great operas. New Zealand Opera’s production in 2026 promises to bring the 240-year-old masterpiece to life in a sumptuous setting.
Picking up narratively where The Barber of Seville left off, The Marriage of Figaro is renowned for its wit and musical sophistication. It follows Figaro and his bride-to-be, Susannah, on their wedding day. Figaro’s employer, Count Almaviva, tries to seduce Susanna, so the engaged couple seek revenge. The cast boasts an unbelievable wealth of talent from Aotearoa and Australia, including runner-up at the 2022 Lexus Song Quest Felicity Tompkins, Julien Van Mellaerts, and James Clayton.
Trans-Tasman creative duo Lindy Hume and Tracy Grant Lord take the helm with direction and design while Orchestra Wellington and conductor James Judd lead from the pit. This season offers opera at its most gorgeous, its most vivid, its most unforgettable.
