Wairarapa Dark Sky reserve

The Wairarapa Dark Sky reserve presents visitors with stellar conditions for a star-packed evening. The reserve is recognised internationally for its exceptional night-sky quality. Lonely Planet named stargazing in the Wairarapa Dark Sky reserve one of the Top 25 Experiences in the World in 2026

At its heart, the Wairarapa Dark Sky reserve is about slowing down, looking up, and reconnecting with the night sky. “The magic of our skies is quite simply breathtaking,” says Charlotte Harding, Wairarapa Dark Sky Project Coordinator.

Guided stargazing experiences in Wairarapa

A guided adventure can make your Dark Sky experience extra special.

  • Under the Stars — come to your location and bring all the equipment needed for an awesome night’s viewing.
  • Star Safari — expert guides share stories, science and cultural perspectives of the night sky.
  • Stonehenge Aotearoa — an astronomical observatory designed to track celestial cycles and deepen understanding of our relationship with the cosmos.

“These three astro tourism businesses offer quite different experiences. Be it myth and legends, culture, science or a deep knowledge of the stars,” says Charlotte. “Whatever the experience, you will leave having had a special experience with people who are truly passionate about the night skies here in the Wairarapa.”

Location and landscape of the reserve

Just over an hour from Wellington, the reserve spans a wide rural landscape across the South Wairarapa and Carterton districts. The core of the reserve is the Aorangi Forest Park, an area of 194 square kilometres. Here, darkness is protected and celebrated.

Light pollution is minimal, and celestial features appear in striking clarity. On a clear night, visitors can see constellations, planets, and the Milky Way.
