About the trail

Howard Road Track is a steep but pleasant trail through native bush. There are two lookout points where you can catch your breath and soak up the scenery along the way.

The first lookout is only 500m from the bottom and 10m off the main track. The second is 100m from the top of the trail and just a short walk along a flat section of track.

At the top of Mount Lowry you will be rewarded with panoramic views over Wellington Harbour.

On the return journey, follow the same route back or continue along Mount Lowry Track. You can also make a loop by connecting to Cheviot Road Track and Ngaumatau Road.

Getting there

  • The trail starts at the end of Howard Road, next to two large water tanks. It ends at the intersection with Mount Lowry, 600m from Wainuiomata Road.
  • There are regular bus and ferry services to Eastbourne and the surrounding areas. Timetables are available from Metlink and East by West Ferries
