About the trail

The Tararua Northern Crossing is a three to five-day hike (depending on weather conditions) along the tops of the Tararua Range. It is an unmarked track, linking the Ōhau and Waingawa catchments, and is one of four classic tramps in Tararua Forest Park.

Recommended for expert trampers only, the Northern Crossing requires good navigation and map reading skills in poor weather, and on the unmarked trail from Pukematawai to Mitre peaks.

The trail crosses several notable Tararua peaks: Pukematawai (1,432m), Arete (1,505m), the Waiohine Pinnacles (1,400m), Girdlestone (1,546m), and Mitre Peak (1,571m) — the highest in Tararua Forest Park.

The Northern Crossing covers many river valleys. High river levels in the Ohau Valley can prevent access, meaning you'll need to take the time-consuming alternate route along Gable End Ridge.
