What is procurement?

Procurement is the process of buying the right thing, in the right amount, at the right time, at the right place and for the right price.

There is an exchange of goods or works, or services delivered by a supplier and paid for by a buyer. To learn more about procurement you can read the Opportunities for Impact  report.

Making procurement more inclusive, transparent and impactful

The Māori economy is key to the well-being of Māori and is an important contributor to the economy of the greater Wellington region. In our role as a regional economic development agency, we seek to support a thriving regional economy for all. Part of this is ensuring there is equitable access to the system through procurement opportunities.

WellingtonNZ commissioned a series of projects aimed at achieving better procurement outcomes for all. First up, opportunities were identified to support greater access to procurement, followed by the development of tools and solutions to help Māori, Pasifika and small local businesses with procurement (Project Ue by Te Ara Hiranga). A region-wide procurement framework was then developed for the wider ecosystem known as project Uaki by Tūhono ki Te Ara Hiranga (Connect Consultancy  and Te Ara Hiranga ).

  • Project Ue surfaced the lived experiences of Māori, Pasifika and small local businesses navigating procurement and developed tangible tools and solutions to help them enter and thrive in the system. Project UE - Procurement Framework Report.pdf
  • Project Uaki delivers an implementation plan designed to change the way councils, suppliers and the broader ecosystem engage. It connects procurement to broader outcomes: equity, local economic uplift, and social impact. Project Uaki Final Report.pdf
