Shrek The Musical
Shrek, Donkey, Fiona and the gang are hitting Kiwi soil next year, with the musical version of the popular film coming to the St James Theatre
Everybody’s favourite ogre is headed to St James Theatre, with the Broadway hit Shrek The Musical coming to our capital next October.
Based on the hugely popular and award-winning film of the same name, the lavish production is set to bring the humour, the classic characters and the uniquely twisted fairytale to life, complete with full musical numbers.
The musical first hit stages back in 2008, and since then has travelled around the world. The 2022 New Zealand rendition is produced by Showcase Entertainment Group - the same producer behind the stage version of Dr Seuss’s The Cat In The Hat and the regional tour of Madagascar The Musical.
The New Zealand version of the show features a cast of 14 talented actors. Plus the set that was used for both the UK and Australian tours worth $1 million, and a dragon that needs a 40-foot shipping container to make it to Kiwi soil.
Producer Layton Lillas says the production is for all ages, and has been designed to be as accessible to as many as possible so the whole family can enjoy it together. He says, “I love to see kids being introduced to theatre at a really high level, but I also know being a dad to a seven-year-old that asking them to sit through two and a half hours is just too much.”
Expressing his excitement for the upcoming event Lillas says, “Believe me everyone who comes will be blown away!”
