Glou Glou
A café and wine bar in central Wellington, Glou Glou has a relaxed feel. Enjoy a coffee from Supreme, matcha, or a glass of wine and a warm atmosphere to match.
Sweetness offers a gateway to this antioxidant-rich drink. Try a creamy and maple-sweetened iced matcha at Swimsuit café. Spot one of the Lego models or glance out of high windows to people watch on Dixon Street. Swimsuit stocks Thea Matcha, premium-grade Japanese matcha from two first-generation Kiwi cousins. Pour and Twist is also a stockist and is one of the earliest advocates of matcha in the city. It's been serving it since 2017 when it first opened. This narrow Garratt Street spot is reminiscent of Tokyo and Singapore cafés. As New Zealand's first manual brew bar, Pour and Twist understand that good things come with time. Owners Elaine Loh and Zuyi Woon hand-whisk the matcha drinks and say they often outweigh coffee orders.

Part of matcha's appeal is its vibrant green beauty. Off Courtenay Place, Glou Glou's interior is rich with shades of green and warm woods. Named after the French for 'glug glug', this is a gorgeous spot to glug a brew or try a matcha sweet treat. If you're looking for a colourful brew, head to West Two Espresso on the corner of Taranaki and Jessie Streets. The full menu's not online, so come in to see what seasonal flavours are on offer. Owner Abbie Dorrington recommends the banana bread matcha.

Wellington is full of cafés that punch well above their weight when it comes to premium matcha. Willis Street's Evil Twins offers a custom, vanilla-infused 'Evil Blend' to try in the café and at home. Wellington owners (and twins) Stephanie and Natalie Chin flew to Kyoto to develop it. Peruse the small retail space selling bold Evil Twins-branded merchandise while you sip. Webb Street café Creamy and Crunchy serves earthy Korean matcha. Owner Summer Kim offers flavours like cherry and strawberry for drinking. Prefer your matcha chewed? There are pastries for that. If you're in the mood for a matcha tour, head to nearby Orange café on Cuba Street afterwards. Their brew is appropriately topped with orange zest (of course).
In 2026, newcomers joined the scene with calming spaces and bold flavours. Perch on a stool at STOL to sample a hand-whisked Japanese blend. Flavours might include black sesame, salted maple, and jammy strawberry. Bring your dog along for the visit to this Featherston Street spot. On Willis Street, take a look at Matcha Lab. Owner Evan Lou hand-whisks layered and elaborate drinks from Chinese-imported matcha.

While many Wellington cafés close around 3pm, Trà Eatery and Coffee Lounge is a great all-rounder for a caffeine hit later in the day. Pick fruity flavours or go for the depth of premium Thea Matcha. Step off Willis Street into a spacious spot offering Vietnamese-inspired food. Looking for something with a bit more bite? Misu Desserts Wellington has a selection of matcha desserts. Owners Yoong Ng and Chu yen Nguyen make these matcha-soaked creations from scratch daily. Pick up desserts like the Matcha Misu or Matcha Oreo Cheesecake from the Cuba Street store.

Satiate your need further by stocking up on premium Japanese matcha to make at home. Visit Common Sense Organics to pick up Matcha Matcha. This culinary grade powder gives you a robust taste with moderate bitterness. Going to Harbourside Market on a Sunday? Stop by the Moegi Matcha stall for organic stone-milled matcha. If a long weekend lie-in sounds better (fair enough), buy your Moegi Matcha online.
