May 2026
Every May, the capital comes alive with laughter, thanks to the New Zealand International Comedy Festival (NZICF). New Zealand’s homegrown talent shares the stage with some of the world’s most exciting comedians. You could catch a big-name international artist, or discover a new local rising star.
Since it began in 1993, the aim of the festival has been to champion the craft of comedy so everyone can share a laugh. Every year, a huge group of comedians descend on Wellington from local shores and beyond to deliver three weeks of merriment.
The festival offers a diverse range of high-quality laughs. It showcases the best of local comedy and gives audiences a taste of some of the world’s best acts. Catch over 100 comics performing at The Opera House, BATS Theatre, Fringe Bar, San Fran, and more.
“Wellington audiences show up, lean in, and back bold work,” says Lauren Whitney, Chief Executive of NZICF “That support from our adventurous audiences helps make Wellington a place where comedy careers grow.”
A proud Wellingtonian, Lauren says the city has nurtured an extraordinary legacy of comedic voices. “Think of the global success of John Clarke (Fred Dagg), Flight of the Conchords, Taika Waititi, Dai Henwood, Hayley Sproull, and Guy Montgomery. Wellington is a place where political satire is baked into the DNA. It’s a place where artists collaborate, innovate, and support each other. The result is a thriving and diverse local comedy scene.”
“Wellington has always punched above its weight when it comes to creativity,” says Lauren. “There’s something about the love of the arts, politics, and the proximity of artists to each other. This city is a powerhouse for comedians, blending sharp observations, strong values, and creative risk-taking.”
The festival is the perfect excuse to spend a weekend in Wellington, says Lauren. “Catch a wide range of comedy shows, explore Cuba Street’s buzzing restaurants and late-night spots, and unwind with a boutique stay at Naumi Hotel.”
So come to town and get ready to giggle, guffaw, or even let loose with a big belly laugh.
