Ride the historic Remutaka Cycle Trail

From railway tunnels, river swims, and rugged coastlines to historical sites, native bush and peaceful farmland, the Remutaka Cycle Trail has it all. The spectacular ride is one of 23 Ngā Haerenga Great Rides of New Zealand and winds through diverse grades and environments.

Running between the Petone foreshore and Palliser Bay on the Cook Strait, the trail can be cycled or walked in either direction. At 115km in length over four sections, the full ride can be done in one day for experienced cyclists, or 2 to 3 days if you’re after a more leisurely ride.

Pedal or walk the peaceful Hutt River Trail

Remutaka Cycle Trail

This first section of the Remutaka Cycle Trail is a mostly flat ride through parkland along Te Awa-Kairangi (Hutt River). The section is mostly wide sealed paths, with occasional gravel sections making it suitable for all ages and abilities.

Starting at the Petone Foreshore and riding along the river to Te Marua, you’ll pass some interesting cultural sites, including Māori pa (fortified villages) and early European settlements. Hikoikoi Reserve, Avalon Park, and Harcourt Park are great picnic stops, while Taita Rock and Whakamoonie swimming holes are safe spots to take a river dip.

Adventure along the rugged Pencarrow Coast

The trail winds its way along the coastline for 7km to Pencarrow Lighthouse and the shores of the Cook Strait. Here you can choose to head along a side trail and spend some time exploring the lighthouse or continue on for 2km to Lake Kohangatera.

You’ll encounter native seabirds and plant life thriving on the exposed coastline, along with indigenous waterfowl, eels and freshwater fish in their natural habitat at Lake Kohangatera and the adjacent Lake Kohangapiripiri.

Explore the wild Wainuiomata Coast and Turakirae Head

Covered in greenery and native bush, Wainuiomata’s landscape provides plenty of opportunity for mountain biking, bush walks, and encounters with native wildlife.

The remote Wainuiomata Coast is a great place to spend a day exploring. Just a short walk or bike ride along the jagged shoreline will lead you to Turakirae Head. Here, the rocky terraces and harsh natural environment provide a thriving habitat for native flora and fauna. You can also see hundreds of fur seals who set up camp during the winter months.

The Jurassic-like Remutaka Forest Park is full of idyllic day-long and overnight bush walks. While Waiu Park provides the backdrop for a series of mountain bike trails.

Explore the quaint seaside villages of Eastbourne & Days Bay

Known for their idyllic beaches, colourful cafés, cute boutiques, and scenic trails, the charming coastal villages of Eastbourne and Days Bay are popular day-trip destinations. Just hop on East by West Ferries for the quick journey across Wellington Harbour.

The sheltered waters of Days Bay make the ideal spot for sunbathing and swimming, while the surrounding hills are full of scenic walking trails. For a memorable ride, hire a bike from Wildfinder and make the 8km journey to Pencarrow Lighthouse. Then end the day relaxing at one of the cafés or restaurants, or exploring the charming boutiques, artisan supply stores, and art galleries.
