About the trail

Camborne Walkway is one of the most popular trails in the Porirua area. The trail begins near Paremata Bridge and follows the shoreline of Pāuatahanui Inlet. It passes by the colourful and iconic Camborne boatsheds, with their mini gardens and displays. Along the way, you might see fish jumping from the water, native birds wading, and people out kayaking or fishing.

The walkway is mostly flat, with gentle undulations. It is narrow and rocky in places, but all stream crossings are bridged. This shared path is popular with walkers, cyclists, prams, and off-lead dogs, so it can get congested at times. Take it easy, enjoy the views, and be ready to give way to others.

Getting there

  • Camborne Walkway starts near Paremata Bridge at Dolly Varden Reserve. From here, head north along the beach at low tide, or take the gravel track through the grass and plantings if the tide is high.
  • The trailhead is just a short walk from Paremata Train station. Check Metlink for timetables. Regular train services run to Paremata Station.
  • Car parking is available at Dolly Varden Reserve.

Little Green Olive is located at the start of the trail (Paremata Beach) — the perfect place to stop before or after hitting the trail.

Know before you go

  • Toilets and car parking are available at Dolly Varden Reserve and near the Wellington Jet Sport Club (on Grays Road).
  • Dolly Varden Reserve also has drinking water and the Little Green Olive food and coffee caravan.
  • The trail is suitable for children and most levels of fitness. The walkway is pram-friendly.
  • There is limited shade on this trail.
  • While the track is wheelchair-accessible, it is rough and narrow in sections, so assistance is required in places.
  • Dogs must be on-lead at all times, except between the boatsheds and the Wellington Jet Sport clubrooms, where they can be off-lead but must be under control.
