About the trail

Follow the wide, gravel track from Raiha Street up to Te Tihi o Rangituhi (Rangituhi Summit). Rising 468m above Porirua, Rangituhi boasts incredible views. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Inland Kaikoura Range in the South Island and to Taranaki Maunga to the northwest.

Trail options

Farm Road connects to other popular walking and mountain biking trails within Ngā Ara o Rangituhi.

  • For a shorter climb without sacrificing the views, exit around half way up Farm Road at Te Wāhi Hononga (The Hub). From here, take a short track up to Te Titiro o Rangituhi (Rangituhi Lookout) for views across Porirua harbour.
  • From The Hub, make a loop by walking back down to the Camp Elsdon car park on Te Ara Utiwai or Rangituhi/Colonial Knob Walkway. A short walk along Raiha Street will have you back at the start of Farm Road.
  • The Hub also connects mountain bikers to a series of trails for an exhilarating ride back down to the bottom.

Getting there

  • Get ready using Plan My Walk by the NZ Mountain Safety Council for track alerts, weather forecasts, trip reviews and a packing list.
  • The trail starts from the Raiha Street entrance to Ngā Ara o Rangituhi. It is also accessible from the top of Te Ara Utiwai or Colonial Knob Walkway.
  • There are regular bus and train services to Porirua and the surrounding area. Timetables are available from Metlink.

Know before you go

  • Be aware that the trail is shared by service vehicles.
  • Dogs are allowed on a leash as far as the stock gate, 2.2 kilometres in and must be walked back down Farm Road.
  • Dogs are not allowed on the trails through scenic reserves or on farmland.
