Joey Alexander Trio

Pianist, band leader and composer Joey Alexander is bringing his trio to Wellington. The 23-year-old is one of Wellington Jazz Festival’s headliners. Joey will perform tracks from ‘Celestial Keeper’, his latest album that draws on the nature and rhythm of life in his home in Indonesia. He'll also include highlights from his back catalogue. Bassist Alon Near and drummer Tyson Jackson join him on stage. The album expands on the melodic style he’s known for so you can expect melodic depth and lyrical improvisation. 

Joey received three GRAMMY nominations before he could legally drink. Bali-born, he first encountered the piano at six and was able to pick out melody by ear. Despite a lack of formal training, he rose into the Indonesian jazz scene and beyond. He's shared the stage with jazz greats like Wayne Shorter and Esperanza Spalding and appeared on major stages like Carnegie Hall, the Apollo Theatre and in jazz festivals around the world.
